Magazine Evaluation - Using Prezi
For the Evaluation of my magazine [Defiance!] I chose to use the website, www.prezi.com which is a website that gives you the opportunity to make a PowerPoint, but with a twist. Prezi allows you to have a moving presentation rather than a slide by slide one, it zooms in and out depending on what size you decide to make something, making it interesting and dynamic.
My media represents anyone who is into the metal music genre. The title, images, colours and way it is written all link in with the genre and the social group that my magazine is aimed at.
Magazine Evaluation on Prezi
For the evaluation we had to answer these questions;
- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- How does your media product represent particular social groups?
- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
- Who would be the audience for your media product?
- How did you attract/address your audience?
- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
My front cover uses other forms and conventions such as teasers, a pull quote, a button and (what I believe to be one of the most important ones) the main image, which will help pull in and attract the targeted audience to the magazine. The layout of the magazine is also quite a conventional layout, including a masthead, of which the image goes over slightly, layered pictures and texts and small teasers which make the magazine interesting.
My magazine flows throughout the Front page, Contents page and Double page spread by linking the images, text and colours all through the magazine. This also makes the magazine seem more professional.

The title Defiance! represents them by in a way describing how people see them; defying rules, doing what they want and not following other people. The colours link in with the music and a lot of the people who listen or are interested in the music my magazine is about generally wear dark colours or 'dangerous' colours such as red and yellow.
The teasers and double page spread are all written quite casually, using swear words sometimes and language that people between 16-25 would understand and be most comfortable reading.
For the media institution of which I would choose to hopefully distribute my magazine would be Future. I chose this institution because it tries to link interests between people together, such as gamers, who listen to music etc. They try to get a widely ranged audience and appeal to them all by concentrating on the links between them.
Throughout this whole course I have learnt a lot of new things and used software and programmes to an extent that I haven't before. Internet based software like Prezi, Blogger and Slideshare all of which I have never used before and were really interesting to try out and learn all these new things. Photoshop was obviously the most used and before creating this magazine I had only ever used it a couple of times for messing about, so it was a great experience learning all the new shortcuts and techniques.
In comparison to my Preliminary finals, this final design for my magazine has improved massively and so has my knowledge of conventions and forms. I have also learnt how to address and appeal to the targeted audience a lot more, using colours, layout and how the magazines text is worded.
After I had finalised my magazine I created another survey for my target audience to see if they felt my final designs for my magazine were successful and appealing. I managed to get 10 people to complete my survey and these are the results;
Would my magazine appeal to you? 80% said yes and 20% said no
What attracts you most to my magazine?
Colours 20%
Images 40%
Articles 30%
All of the above 10%
All of the above 10%
Do you think my magazine would be successful?
90% said yes and 10% said no
Is £2.99 a reasonable price?
100% said yes
The person who didn't think my magazine would be successful told me that they felt this way because the magazine doesn't appeal towards them as well as the fact that they felt there was a few things wrong, however the others that said they felt it would be successful told me that the magazine was well put together and there could have been a few minor alterations but it was perfectly fine otherwise.
Editing Of Pictures
This post is just to show a little bit of information on how I edited my photo's, the different techniques and tools that I have used as well as showing some photo's before and after images.
Shot Table
This is the shot table I created for my magazine. I got pretty much every shot almost exactly how I wanted. This was really good as it went well with my magazine and my article (which was aimed mostly at jackson but some of the questions were about the whole band).
Purpose of shot. | Feature of shot. | Type of shot. | Mise-en-Scene. | Equipment needed. | Details of shot. |
Front Cover | Band Singer (Jackson). | Long shot. | Casual look, wearing own clothes. Outside with old looking wall behind. | Camera. | Outside, with him just standing there. |
Front Cover [Poster Pic] | Band Singer (Jackson). | Mid-Close Shot. | Casual look, wearing own clothes. Dull wall behind him. | Camera. | Outside, with him lighting a cigarette. |
Front Cover [Poster Pic] | Georgia. | Mid shot. | In a studio posing. | Camera. | In a studio, brick wall as background. |
Contents | Band Singer (Jackson). | Mid shot. | Same casual look as before. | Camera. | Jackson looking to the left (if looking at him). |
Contents | Me. | Close up. | Just me in normal clothes. | Camera. | Me normally. |
Double Page | Animus Sadist (Whole band). | Long shot. | Animus Sadist ready to go and practice/play a gig. | Camera. | The whole band, staggered but standing next to each other. |
Double Page | Band Singer (Jackson) | Mid-Long shot. | Jackson side on with a microphone. | Camera. | Jackson screaming down the microphone. Side on view. |
Double Page | Band Singer (Jackson) | Mid-Close up. | Jackson posing a little holding a microphone. | Camera. | Jackson holding the microphone up to the camera. |
Double Page Spread Developement and Final
This PowerPoint is showing the different stages of development during the creation of my Magazine [Defiance!] Double Page Spread. The presentation describes what changes I have made at each stage and why, as well as why I chose certain conventions.
Comparison of my Contents to my Preliminary
This post shows how I have developed my photoshop skills as well as making my contents page look more conventional and appealing towards my audience.
As you can see my Preliminary contents page was pretty dull and boring. It has little information about the contents of the magazine and doesnt have very god form. The pictures are plain and dont have much that relates them to the article on the contents and front page. The columns and numbers are also different widths and sizes making it look unproffesional.
Whereas my final piece has become a lot more conventional and formed. It looks more like a real magazine, with the colours matching the genre of the magazine as well as the pictures linking in with the relevant articles. There isnt any big blank spaces on this contents either so it doesnt look like there is anything missing. The columns have been made to all be the same size, with clear changes in the text to show the difference between headings, subheadings and descriptions.
